Voter Registration

To register to vote, you must be:

  • a U.S. Citizen
  • resident of Massachusetts,
  • 18 years of age on or before the next election


You may register to vote in person at the Town Clerk's Office or through the mail.  Please call us at 978-249-4551 or email a request including your name and address and we will send you a voter registration form in the mail.  The deadline to register to vote is 20 days prior to any election.  Please contact Town Clerk for deadlines.


Absentee Ballots

You may apply for an absentee ballot if you are unable to vote at the polls on election day due to:

  1. absence from Athol during the hours the polls are open
  2. physicial disability preventing you from going to the polling place
  3. religous belief

All applications for absentee ballots must be received in writing no later than 12 noon of the day before the election.  Applications must be mailed or hand delivered to the Town Clerk's Office.

Vital Records
   Certified copies - $10.00 each

  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Death Certificate

Copies may be obtained in person or through the mail.  Please call ahead if picking up records in person to allow sufficient time for request to be processed.

Genealogical Research
For geneaology searches,all requests must be submitted in writing and mailed to: Town Clerk's Office, 584 Main Street, Suite 10, Athol MA 01331. You must include the full name of the person to be researched, and actual dates or timeframes, and whether it's a birth, death, or marriage. Also include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return information. Please enclose appropriate fee as listed above if requesting certified copies.

Marriage Licenses
          Filing Fee - $25.00

  • Notice of Intentions - Couple must file intentions together.  Marriage license is valid for 60 days.  3 day waiting period from day the intentions are filed until day marriage license can be picked up.
  • Proof of residence is required of both parties. (Examples of acceptable proof:  Valid Driver's License with current address, recent utility bill, passport, etc. Contact Town Clerk for other acceptable proof.)
  • If either party has been divorced, copy of divorce decree showing date of dissolution of previous marriage.

 


Dog Licenses

All dogs age 6 months and older must be licensed in the Town Clerk's Office.  Dog licenses expire the last day of February in each year.  Renewal period is January 1st - last day of February.  All dog licenses renewed March 1st or after will be charged a $15.00 late charge in addition to the cost of the license.

  • Male/Female Dog - $15.00
  • Neutered/Spayed Dog - $8.00
  • Late Licensing Penatly - $15.00 (March 1st and after)

Dog Licenses may be done in person or by mail.  A valid rabies certificate and proof of neutering/spaying certificate (if applicable) must be shown each time when registering a dog.

Kennel Licenses

  • 4 or less dogs - $40.00
  • up to 10 dogs - $50.00
  • 10 or more dogs - $60.00

Any one who has 4 or more dogs is required to have a kennel license.  To apply for a kennel license, you must appear before the Zoning Board of Appeals.  Please contact the Building Department for information.

Rabies Clinic

Athol Animal Control sponsors a rabies clinic in April and November.  Please call Town Clerk's Office or email for exact date.


Fishing, Hunting, and Trapping Licenses

*Hunters must show one of the following to obtain a hunting or sporting license:

  1. a previous hunting license
  2. Certificate of Competency from a government issued certificate of completion from a basic hunter education course

**Minors between age of 15-17 must gave a written consent of a parent or guardian and comply with one of the following three requirements:

  1. Provide a written statement that at all times when hunting or target shooting , said minor will be accompanied by a person 17 years of age or older; OR
  2. Show a certificate of competency from the Massachusetts Hunter Education Program or an approved certificate from another state which was issued not more than 3 years prior to his/her 15th birthday; OR
  3. A valid F.I.D. Card.

Fishing and Hunting Licenses may also be obtained online at the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.
