Zoning Board of Appeals Vacancy

The Town of Athol is seeking Athol residents to join the Town of Athol's Zoning Board of Appeals

The Town of Athol is seeking Athol residents to join the Town of Athol’s Zoning Board of Appeals.  The Board currently has a vacancy for both a regular, full member and up to two (2) associate members. We welcome these new members in order to achieve a full five-member board and have associate members available to fill in on cases where regular members will be absent or prevented from hearing a case due to conflict of interest.  The Zoning Board of Appeals typically meets on the 4th Wednesday evening of the month to discuss, hear and decide applications filed with the Board. The Zoning Board of Appeals’ responsibilities include:

  • To hear and decide appeals taken by any person aggrieved by an order or decision of the inspector of Buildings, zoning agent, or other administrative official, in violation of any provision of Chapter 40A, Mass. General Laws, or by the Athol Zoning By-Law

  • To hear and decide applications for special permits as provided as set forth in Chapter 40A, Mass. General Laws, Section 9, or by the Athol Zoning By-Law

  • To hear and decide petitions for variances as set forth in Chapter 40A, Mass. General Laws, Section 10.

  • To hear and decide petitions for Comprehensive Permits, as set for in Chapter 40B, Mass. General Laws

Members are appointed by the Athol Board of Selectmen.  For more information, please contact Eric R. Smith, AICP, Director of Planning and Community Development, at (978) 575-0301 ext. 300 or planning@townofathol.org.
