Lord Pond Plaza Mural Design Competition

Call for Submissions

The Town of Athol, in conjunction with the North Quabbin Community Coalition, invites artists of all ages to participate in a mural design competition to celebrate the greening of Lord Pond Plaza!

The Town of Athol has begun assessing the feasibility of redeveloping Lord Pond Plaza into urban green space through a grant from the Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Program. This feasibility assessment will identify opportunities to incorporate nature-based solutions and green infrastructure into the Lord Pond Plaza parking lot area, such as stream daylighting, shade trees for cooling, green space for stormwater and flooding mitigation, and open space improvements. The selected mural design will help celebrate and broadcast this effort.

The theme for this mural project is “Greening Lord Pond Plaza.” The design competition is open to any individual residing in the North Quabbin region who can create art appropriate to the theme and setting. Participants may submit up to two (2) designs and each design will be judged individually. Students in grades 7-12 are especially encouraged to submit mural designs.

PROJECT DETAILS

The overarching theme for the mural is “Greening Lord Pond Plaza,” and the mural design shall reflect any or all of the following related themes:

History of Lord Pond Plaza

Climate change

Green space

Social resiliency

The selected design will be printed onto a 4’ x 8’ panel and installed safely by a professional sign company.

The selected artist will be awarded $250 along with a certificate of recognition.

Panel printing and installation costs will be covered by the Town of Athol.

SUBMISSION AND SELECTION OF DESIGNS

Each participant shall submit a digital design (JPEG or PDF) via email to admin@nqcc.org by 5:00 PM on April 30, 2021 OR mail a printed design (8.5” x 11”) to the North Quabbin Community Coalition at 251 Exchange St, Athol, MA 01331. Designs that are mailed must be postmarked on or before April 30, 2021. High-resolution scans or photographs of paintings or other hand-rendered artwork are eligible. It is recommended that any hand-rendered artwork be drawn to scale; for example, a 2’ x 4’ painting will retain the correct proportions when photographed and enlarged for the 4’ x 8’ panel.

The selected artist will be required to submit a final design sized at 4’ x 8’ and no less than 150 DPI. This final design shall be submitted as one of the following file types: EPS, AI, PS, JPEG, PDF, or TIF.

Submissions will be reviewed by a selection panel consisting of representatives from the community and the Town of Athol. The public will also be invited to review and vote for submissions through the Athol Public Library and NQCC’s Facebook page.

The winning design will be selected by the end of May 2021.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

The artwork must be an original work that is wholly conceptualized and executed by the participant. Designs that copied the composition of existing works will automatically be disqualified, even if they are rendered in a different style, medium, color scheme, or even if other elements have been added.

The Town of Athol reserves the right to withdraw any award or cash prize at any time should the participant violate any of the rules and regulations of the competition or if the Town of Athol deems, in any way, that granting a participant the award will damage the reputation of the Town of Athol.

The final design selected will become the property of the Town of Athol with unlimited rights of use. The artist retains copyright ownership.

Failure to comply with the above rules and regulations shall automatically disqualify the participant.
