Municipal Overnight Winter Parking Policy and Permit Application

Residents in the areas surrounding the municipal parking lots off Exchange Street and at Walnut and Canal Streets (behind Millers River Environmental Center) may purchase an overnight parking permit valid from November 15 to April 15 to coincide with the Town’s annual winter parking ban.

The cost is $5.00 annually for one (1) vehicle and FREE for Veterans with a valid DD214.  The permits are only valid for designated parking spaces which are marked by signage and are available on a FIRST COME/FIRST SERVED basis.  There are no individually assigned parking spaces.

Rules and Regulations

Parking permits are valid for designated spaces between the hours of Midnight and 8:00 a.m. in municipal lots located behind Exchange Street (at base of parking deck) and at Walnut and Canal streets (behind Millers River Environmental Center).

Residents wishing to park overnight in the municipal lots shall register their vehicle with the Town Manager’s office.  Vehicle will receive a municipal parking sticker which must be displayed on the back of the rear view mirror.

Permits are available only for vehicles registered to residents of Exchange, Main, South or Traverse streets (for Exchange Street lot), or for residents of Canal, Walnut or Maple streets (for Millers River Environmental Center lot).  A valid Massachusetts driver’s lic and current, non-expired registration must be presented when applying for a permit.

Vehicles parked overnight in a non-designated/signed area without a sticker will be ticketed and/or towed at the owner’s expense.

Vehicles must be moved from municipal lots the next day after a snow event between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. (Noon) or they will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Vehicles must have a valid Massachusetts registration, current inspection sticker, be in clean and operable condition (e.g. not leaking fluids, etc.) and shall not be left on blocks or other types of stands or cause any blight issues.

The Town of Athol shall not be responsible for any loss or damage to any vehicle while parked in the municipal lots.

The Town of Athol reserves the right to modify these rules in its discretion.
