Health Department
Description
The Athol Board of Health is required by state and local laws to perform critical duties related to the protection of public health. These duties cover a broad range of responsibilities with the guiding principle that many community health problems are best handled by local officials familiar with local conditions. The Board of Health:
- Enforces health and safety codes pertaining to food, housing, pools, beaches, tanning, lead poisoning prevention and more.
- Protects the environment by overseeing septic systems, wells, illegal dumping, trash hauling, testing swimming water, sales of compost bins, and more.
- Plays a key role in disease prevention and health promotion providing flu vaccine clinics, public education, communicable disease follow-up and more.
- Particpiates in emergency preparedness.
