UPCOMING ELECTIONS

State Primary - Tuesday, September 3, 2024

State Election - Tuesday, November 5, 2024

Voters can choose one of the following option to vote:

IN PERSON ON ELECTION DAY

Polls open at 7:00 am and close at 8:00 pm for the State Primary and State Election.  All precincts vote at the Town Hall, 584 Main Street.

VOTE BY MAIL

All registered voters qualify to vote by mail for the 2024 elections.  A postcard application will be mailed to all registered voters, at their mailing address, who have not already applied to receive a vote by mail ballot.  If you did not receive a postcard, please click here for the Vote by Mail application or you can register online through the Massachusetts online mail-in ballot application system.

Applying for a Primary Ballot

If you are applying for a primary ballot, and you are not registered to vote in a party, you must indicate which party's ballot you want to receive.  If you do not provide a party on your application, you will not receive a primary ballot.  If you are unenrolled (commonly called "Independent") or enrolled in a political designation, you are allowed to vote in the party primary of your choice.  Your ballot choice will not affect your party registration.

Submitting your Vote by Mail Application

  • By Mail - mail signed application to Town Clerk's Office, 584 Main Street, Athol MA 01331
  • Drop Box - drop signed application in Drop Box located in front of the Town Hall
  • Email the signed application to vote@townofathol.org
  • Fax the signed application to 978-294-2491
  • In Person - Office hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; Tuesday 8:00 am-8:00 pm; Friday - Closed

Deadline to submit Vote by Mail Applications

  • State Primary - Application to receive a mail-in ballot for the State Primary must be received in the Town Clerk's Office by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27th
  • State Election - Application to receive a mail-in ballot for the State Election must be received in the Town Clerk's Office by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, October 29th

Return of Vote by Mail Ballots

Mail-in ballots include a postage pre-paid return ballot envelope that is addressed to the Town Clerk's Office.  You may return your ballot by mail, by placing it in the drop box located outside of the Town Hall or deliver in person to the Town Clerk's Office.  Ballots CANNOT be return to the polling location on Election Day.  They can be put in the drop box no later than 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.  

Voters who receive a mail-in ballot but do not return it prior to Election Day may appear to vote in person to cast a ballot on Election Day.  Any voter that has returned a vote by mail ballot (or voted early in person) is not permitted to appear to vote in person on Election Day.

Voter Registration

Deadline to register to vote for the September 3, 2024 State Primary is Saturday, August 24th.  

Deadline to register to vote for the November 5, 2024 State Election is Saturday, October 26th.

Registering Online:

In order to register to vote online, you must have a signature on file with the Registry of Motor Vehicles.  If you currently have a Massachusetts driver's license or state ID card, you may use the online voter registration application to register, update your address, or change your party affiliation at https://www.sec.state.ma.us/OVR/.

Registering by Mail:

If you do not qualify to register to vote online, or if your would prefer to register by mail, you may download the voter registration form by clicking here.  The form must be completed, signed, an delivered to the Town Clerk's Office.  Voter registration forms submitted by mail must be postmarked no later than the voter registration deadline (10 days before the election).

In Person:

Voter registration forms are available in the Town Clerk's Office.  Office hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; Tuesday 8:00 am - 8:00 pm; Fridays - Closed

Campaigning on Election Day or Early Voting:

No poster, card, handbill, placard, picture or circular intended to influence the action of the voter, other than those expressly authorized by M.G.L. c.54 §65, shall be posted, exhibited, circulated or distributed in the building where the polling location is located, on the walls thereof, on the premises located at 584 Main Street, stand within one hundred and fifty feet (150') of the building entrance door to said Polling Location on Election Day or during Early Voting.
