Seeking Athol Residents for Representation on the Town of Athol’s

Municipal Decarbonization Task Force

For Immediate Release: December 8, 2022

PRESS RELEASE-

The Town of Athol is seeking two (2) Athol citizens to serve on a newly created the Town of Athol Municipal Decarbonization Task Force.

With assistance from a Mass. Department of Energy Resources Energy Planning Grant and under the direction of the Town’s Energy Committee, the Town of Athol recently completed a Municipal Decarbonization Plan. The Municipal Decarbonization Plan was prepared to help the Town align with the State’s goals to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and 85% by 2050.  The Plan focuses on municipal energy use, which is primary from the Town’s facilities and vehicles, but also addresses renewable energy generation on Town property.

The Committee is being established after the Board of Selectmen voted on December 6, 2022 to establish the Municipal Decarbonization Task Force, which includes two at-large members.  Additional members include a representative from the following Town boards and committee: Board of Selectmen, Capital Planning Committee, Energy Committee, and the Finance Warrant and Advisory Committee.

The Task Force, which was a recommendation of the Plan, will be charged with reviewing potential projects and to address the financial, facility and vehicle considerations of implementation. A copy of the Municipal Decarbonization Plan is available here: https://www.athol-ma.gov/sites/g/files/vyhlif2741/f/uploads/town_of_athol_municipal_decarbonization_06_1_22.pdf
